Jonah Mngola is the current Programs Manager of Open Extractives at the Open Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. He is the former Director and co-founder of the Strathmore Extractives Industry Centre, he is the current Kenya educational advisory board member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators for 3 years running now, he sits on the advisory board of the International Energy Law Research Institute (IELRI), he is the legal expert for the World Energy Council, the Kenyan Chapter, he is a member of the Law Society of Kenya, the East African Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the International Bar Association.
Jonah has lectured Oil and Gas Law at Strathmore University School of Law to both undergraduates and post-graduates and is currently a lecturer at Riara University in Nairobi, Kenya.
Jonah is a legal expert in extractives, having obtained his masters at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland in an LLM in Oil and Gas Law. Jonah has received further training from HSE International LLC on Environment & Social Risk Management in the Oil and Gas Industry and was trained on Extractive Industries and Sustainable Development at the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI) in New York.
Jonah has carried out several projects in Kenya’s extractive industry including, developing a transparency and accountability framework for Kenya’s extractive industry, developing proactive disclosure guidelines for extractive companies in Kenya amongst others. He has advised the Somali Government, the Kenyan Government and both Kwale County Government and Taita-Taveta County Government in Kenya in so far as their natural resources are concerned. He has also published widely in the extractive sector and conducted several trainings within and outside Kenya.
